More than thirty million people a year go to the doctor because of a cough they just can't get rid of. In fact, it's the number one reason that people visit a doctor at all. But when is a cough really something to worry about? According to Mother Nature Network, the first thing to do is to figure out the reason for the cough. It could be from a cold or flu virus, or from post-nasal drip due to illness, allergies, or medications. Acid reflux can also cause throat irritation and a cough. Tried-and-true remedies are honey, warm beverages, inhaling steam, cough medicine, and sucking on cough drops. However, see your doctor if you have a cough and a fever, or if you are wheezing or coughing up green or bloody phlegm. Or, if the cough lingers for weeks, with no sign of improvement, it's time to call the doctor.
