Adam Yamaguchi interviews an illegal immigrant, Rafa, who was deported back to El Salvador in 2009. Rafa now has a young son who he plans to smuggle to the U.S. They're going to journey to Guatemala legally where they’ll then cross The Suciate River, near the border town of Tapachula, and enter Mexico illegally. From there they'll take the nearly 2500 trip to Tijuana, at California’s southern border. Finally, he’ll hire a coyote to take his son into the states where he’ll live with family he has waiting on the other side. Rafa will likely remain in Mexico, a three our drive away from where his daughters, all U.S. citizens, and his son will live.

Adam questions such an irresponsible plan to risk his son's future by trying to get him across the border illegally, effectively signing his son up to be in the exact position Rafa is in now in the next couple of decades, perpetuating the vicious cycle.

Rafa says he understands Adam’s position, but feels he has no other choice. He’d rather attempt to get his son to a better place and fail than to never have tried at all. Watch the full CBSN ORIGINALS documentary at www.cbsnews.com/border
