The people of Gdansk bid farewell to their murdered mayor Pawel Adamowicz at St. Mary's Basilica in the northern Polish city on Saturday. The funeral was attended by some 3,500 people, while thousands more watched on the screens placed throughout the town.

The President of the European Council Donald Tusk, Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki as well as former presidents such as Lech Walesa also attended the funeral.

Pawel Adamowicz, 53, was stabbed in the heart on stage, during a high-profile annual charity drive in the northern Polish city on January 13. He died the next day in hospital after a five-hour operation failed to save him.

The alleged knifeman, a 27-year-old with armed robbery convictions, was disarmed and detained at the scene of the stabbing.
