Finishing the vertical tunnel drill, jacking up tunnel walls, and digging horizontal galleries to reach trapped two-year-old Julen Rosello’s possible location could take up to Tuesday, according to the head of the operation Angel Garcia speaking in Malaga on Sunday.

"When we start digging the horizontal gallery, it will depend a lot on the materials that are found," said Garcia, whose rescue team has been having a hard time breaking through the hillside rock layers to reach the trapped toddler.

"This kind of work, it may take up to 24 hours," he explained.

The rescue team has been awaiting the arrival of a special drill from Guadalajara, reportedly better fit to penetrate the rocks.

Julen, aged two, fell down a 100-metre well (328ft) on January 13, triggering a week-long underground rescue operation.
