Eric Arthur Blair known by his pen name George Orwell was born in Motihari, Bihar in British India. He was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic, whose work is marked by simple prose, awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism. January 21 marks the 69th death anniversary of George Orwell, the writer who gave English literature one of its most chilling lines: Big Brother is watching you. That line, which distilled the terror of Orwell’s classic novel 1984, in which he predicted a soulless, state-controlled future. His best-known works are Animal Farm, 1984, The Road to Wigan Pier, Homage to Catalonia, Down and Out in Paris and London, among others.
