Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick honoured Swiss actor Bruno Ganz in Berlin on Saturday, following the news of the actor's death on the same day in Zurich.

"The sky is blue, the sky above Potsdamer Platz is blue and the sun is out. And I guess there is a reason, it's a sad reason, because Bruno Ganz died," Kosslick said.

"I don't know if he's already there, but my feeling is it's [the weather] so beautiful today because nobody wants to be in his way when he goes," he added.

Ganz, who was a prominent figure in the German-language film industry and television for more than 50 years, portrayed Adolf Hitler in the 2004 film "Downfall" and an angel in 1987's "Wings of Desire."
