According to Mother Nature Network, the Bramble Cay melomys, was declared extinct this week by researchers in Australia.
This rodent is reportedly the first mammal species wiped out by human-induced climate change, having lost most of its habitat to rising seas.
The Bramble Cay melomys was a distinct species of rodents from Oceania with an island of its own, and the only mammal native to the Great Barrier Reef.
It has taken nearly three years for the Australian government to formally declare the Bramble Cay melomys extinct. The Minister of Environment mentioned the news in a press release regarding stronger protections for other threatened species.
