President Donald Trump says the United States will impose tariffs on European car imports if it cannot reach a trade deal with the European Union.

Trump confirmed the decision when he was speaking to reporters at a White House meeting with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. This, after European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, said the U.S. president had promised he would not impose additional import tariffs on European cars for the time being. Meanwhile, a US confidential Commerce Department report was expected to clear the way for Trump to threaten tariffs of up to 25 percent. Trump, however, downplayed the report, and called it a study. He stressed that the bottom-line result is whether or not the U.S. can make a deal with the EU.
