Two Giraffes Killed By Lightning Strike At A Florida Safari Park

A drive-through Florida safari park confirmed Tuesday that two giraffes were killed instantly when struck by lightning last month.
On May 3, Lily and Jioni, two of the 18 giraffes in Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, Fl. were in their pasture when a sudden thunderstorm approached.
Spokesperson Haley Passeser told CNN that the facility has a lightning detection system and safe shelter for the animals.
Passeser said employees followed standard protocol by opening the animal shelter area, but they cannot make the animals seek shelter.
The park opted to delay reporting the deaths to the public out of respect for mourning and because pathology tests needed to be completed.
