The LA Times recently uncovered that a shocking $300 million in government contracts designated for minority-run businesses has instead gone to people with unverified claims of tribal membership. In at least a dozen cases, businesses owners had claimed membership in three Cherokee groups that are not federally recognized and are considered illegitimate by other tribes. Federal and state lawmakers are calling for tighter rules.
