Thousands of people have marched across Australia calling for the immediate closure of offshore detention camps for asylum seekers.
Rallies were held in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and the port cities of Sydney and Perth. Among the protesters were former detainees, refugee supporters and politicians from opposition parties. They all demanded the government close detention centers for refugees on Manus and Nauru Islands and bring them into the country. The demonstrations are held amid scandalous revelations about the abuse and ill-treatment of refugees at the camps. The leaks prompted international and local outcries. Under pressure, the Australian government announced on August 17 that it will close Nauru and Manus camps, but it reiterated that none of the asylum seekers will be allowed to resettle in Australia.
