The European Parliament has begun a year-long investigation into the Volkswagen diesel emissions-rigging scandal.
The EU will also seek to determine if regulators could have done more to prevent a scandal affecting an estimated 11 million vehicles worldwide.
In it's first closed-door session, the committee of inquiry selected its chair and four vice-presidents to represent the parliament.
The European Commission has also asked the industry and national authorities for information and proposed reforms to legislation that would give the EU executive enforcement powers.
