Bernie Madoff, who operated one of the most infamous Ponzi schemes in American history, sent an email to NBC News on Friday saying that the damage he inflicted on thousands of investors was "nothing" compared to the pain he feels from the death of his two sons, Andrew and Mark. NBC News is working to get a response from Irving Picard, the trustee representing the victims of the fraud. In the email, Madoff wrote, "I live with the knowledge that they never forgave me for betraying their love and trust. As much as I tried to reach out to them in an attempt to explain the circumstances that caused my betrayal they could not find it possible to forgive me. I do understand their unwillingness."
