New Japanese emperor set to take over on New Year's Day 2019

Japan is making plans for Emperor Akihito to retire and be replaced by his eldest son on January 1, 2019. The monarch had earlier expressed his desire to abdicate in August 2016. The country is currently preparing a new legal framework to deal with its first abdication in 200 years.
