The retired Marine Corps general is president-elect Donald Trump's pick to lead the Defense Department. Democrats are waiting to grill him on that opposition during his confirmation hearing. Though Mattis looks like a sure bet for confirmation, Democrats will be paying close attention to his answers. They are worried that the incoming Trump administration will roll back what they see as eight years of progress on military social issues, from women in combat to allowing gays to serve openly.
