The United States has deployed ten F-35B stealth fighters to its air station in Iwakuni, Japan, marking the first time the units have been deployed overseas.
According to a U.S. Marine Corps spokesperson, the military aircraft left their U.S. base in Arizona, on Monday and reached Japan on Thursday, with six more scheduled to arrive sometime this year.
The U.S. base in Japan is designed to serve as the primary channel for American forces in the event of a military situation arising from the Korean Peninsula.
In related news, CNN reports that the U.S. defense department has deployed a Sea-Based X-Band radar to an undisclosed spot in the Pacific.
The radar is part of a larger missile defense system.
The news comes just days after North Korea announced that it could launch an intercontinental ballistic missile "anytime and anywhere."
