Liquid egg products tainted with Fipronil pesticide have been discovered at a food company in northern Spain.
Spanish officials say the products did not enter the food chain and were not used. The batch was probably imported from neighboring France. 16 European countries as well as Hong Kong have reported contaminated eggs in their markets since the problem first surfaced. Millions of eggs have been pulled from supermarkets and dozens of poultry farms closed. The European Commission has called for an extraordinary meeting to discuss the scandal. Belgium was the first country to notify the EU’s food safety alert system on July 20. The news, however, did not surface till August the first.
