Governor Christie: For the last eight years I have been honored to be your Commander in Chief and standing here today I could not be prouder of the men and women of our New Jersey National Guard, more than 8,400 members strong and comprised of the Airmen and Soldiers of the New Jersey Army and Air National Guard. Your service and your sacrifice to our state and our nation is unrivaled. Our units are mission ready, with our Air National Guard currently at 108 percent strength, the second highest in the nation, and the Army Guard at 99 percent. Whether your operations have been during peacetime, during moments of conflict or times of war, you all have served with distinction. Since September 11, our New Jersey National Guard has mobilized more than 20,000 troops, many of whom have answered the call to duty many, many times. Today and over the past several years we’ve witnessed how your service and assistance on the home front is equally vital. Just recently, we’ve sent Army Blackhawks and Air Force TACP’s to lend a hand to our friends in Texas who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey. We also mobilized 150 troops and 50 vehicles from our Cape May 253rd transportation company to help Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. In addition, we have nearly 30 security forces from the 108th wing assisting in the United States Virgin Islands, and now we are mobilizing another 500 members to assist Puerto Rico in recovering from the destruction of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, with another 2,500 standing ready if needed. For me, however, at no time was your commitment, your professionalism, and your humanity more evident than during Superstorm Sandy. It is hard to believe that later this month will be the 5th anniversary of that storm. I vividly recall how thousands of our residents were evacuated safely, sheltered, fed, and protected until they could return home, and how communities were able to begin their cleanup, their recovery, and their rebuilding in peace and safety because of you. The very visible presence of the New Jersey National Guard was a source of comfort for our citizens and a source of strength for your Governor. As we now face a new era of increased worldwide tensions and emerging threats to our country we continue our appreciation for all you do to safeguard our State and our Nation. My commitment to you, our brave and courageous service members, our veterans, and your families, while in office and after I depart will always be steadfast. Today, we live in a free country because of the sacrifices that our servicemen and women have made while fighting to defend freedom and the liberties we cherish as Americans. I want to thank you for your love of country, for your commitment to bring the American ideals of freedom and democracy to people across the globe. It is an emotional day for me to review my troops for the final time as Commander in Chief of the New Jersey National Guard. It has been an extraordinary honor and privilege for the last eight years for me to serve as the Governor of the state where I was born and raised and where I’m raising our children along with my wife, Mary Pat. On behalf of me and Mary Pat and our family, I want to thank you so much for the support, the guidance, the counsel, and the prayers of the veterans who live here in New Jersey and of the active duty guards men and women who have stood with us over all the challenges of the last eight years. I’ve had a number of different titles in my career and I’m privileged to have had them, but I suspect I will never have a greater honor or privilege than being the Governor of New Jersey and the Commander in Chief of the New Jersey National Guard. So, on today in my final ceremony with you, I not only want to thank you for your service but thank you for your support. I want to God bless you and your families and pray that God continues to bless the state of New Jersey and the United States of America. Thank you all very much.
