Despite Threat Of Climate Change, Walruses Denied Endangered Species Act Protection

On Wednesday, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has denied Endangered Species Act protections to the Pacific walrus, as well as twenty-four other species. The Pacific walrus is threatened by the continuing decline of sea ice, an environment crucial to their species for giving birth, nursing, and resting, as the planet continues to warm. Shaye Wolf, climate science director for the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a press release, "This disgraceful decision is a death sentence for the walrus. Walruses face extinction from climate change, and denying them critical protections will push them closer to the edge.” The USFWS has defended their decision, by citing the walruses’ demonstrated ability to adapt to environmental changes.
