A new study says more people who have strokes also had significant stroke risk factors before the event.
High blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and drug abuse have all been on the rise in stroke patients over recent years.
Researchers from the University of Miami suggest lifestyle factors such as obesity, lack of exercise, poor diet and smoking may play a role.
According to UPI, increases in high blood pressure among blacks and diabetes among Hispanics stood out in the results.
