The Georgia Aquarium and Shedd Aquarium's are reportedly partnering with several state and federal agencies, and universities to support new research to help save the critically endangered population of Alaskan beluga whales. Cook Inlet belugas, who once thrived throughout the inlet waters have seen a near 50 percent population decline since the mid 1990s due to over-harvesting and unknown causes. Today only an estimated 340 belugas remain. Reports say the goal of the new research is to better understand the rare whales so conservation initiatives can be implemented that would secure their survival.
