Recently, Manuka honey has been touted as a "superfood" that can treat many ailments including colds, flus, sore throats, allergies and other types of wounds. It's also being praised for its abilities to lower cholesterol, improve sleep and reduce hair loss. Throughout history, honey has been used therapeutically, but it fell out of favor in the mid-20th century with the introduction of antibiotics. But honey shouldn't be dismissed since it contains antimicrobial properties caused by its high sugar content and low pH. Manuka honey, which is derived from the nectar of manuka trees has an added component to its potent antimicrobial activity called methylglyoxal, making it even better at killing off bacteria.
