From the Jerusalem crisis to the Syrian civil war, Russia's president Vladimir Putin has been staking his claim in the Middle East on a whirlwind tour of the region.
The first stop was a surprise visit to a strategic airbase in Syria's Latakia Province. That's where Putin ordered a partial withdrawal of his troops from Syria.

He then flew to Cairo for planned talks with Egyptian President Abdul Fattah el-Sisi, before doubling back and heading north to Ankara for a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In Turkey, Putin joined his Turkish counterpart in criticising a US decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
