Divorce filings tend to spike in January, and 2018 could be an especially popular year for divorce due to impending changes to US tax policies. Usually it's not the wintry weather that does people in but rather the post-holiday jolt back to reality. According to lawyer Jacqueline Newman "most people in December want to get through the holidays. Nobody wants a divorce summons put into their stocking." But once the holidays pass Newman says people flock to her office to start getting information about what it'd be like to go through a divorce. She calls it the "keeping your options open" month. Then many clients return in February and March ready to commit to the decision.
