How Will Government Shutdown Affect Americans?

With the White House and Legislature failing to reach a deal on funding the federal government before a fast-approaching deadline, talk of a shutdown has dominated social media feeds and news cycles everywhere. But what exactly will happen if the shutdown goes through? If funding expires on Saturday, Americans might begin to notice the effects nearly immediately, as on Monday hundreds of thousands of federal employees - deemed non-essential - won’t show up for work. This means several government offices, programs, and activities - including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Internal Revenue Service, and even sections of the Department of Defense will shut down completely, while Congress continues to try and find a solution, even as much of their staff is at home without pay. Last time there was a shutdown, In 2013, 850,000 federal workers were furloughed, constituting nearly 40 percent of the total federal civilian workforce. Some services that have a separate funding stream, however, will stay openL including mail deliverers, Federal courts, and select departments of national parks.
