The Congress got a big boost in Karnataka as they won the Jayanagar assembly poll by 2,889 votes on Wednesday. The winning candidate - Sowmya Reddy – is the daughter of Ramlinga Reddy who won the seat four times earlier. The election was deferred following the death of BJP candidate BN Vijayakumar – also the sitting MLA from Jayanagar - just days before the assembly election on May 12. BJP had fielded his brother BN Prahlad Babu in this election. The result will also cement Congress-JDS ties further in the state as chief minister HD Kumaraswamy had withdrawn his party’s candidate to support Reddy. Congress now has 80 seats in Karnataka assembly.
