Recently published diaries from Albert Einstein reveal that he held racist and xenophobic views.
He kept the personal diary in 1922 and 1923 during a trip to East Asia, Palestine and Spain.
"The language is extreme. It's disturbing and shocking for the modern era.”
Ze-ev Rosenkran, translator of the journals, told CNN.
Einstein describes the Chinese as "industrious, filthy, obtuse people."
In Egypt, he comments on the “riff-raff” which has a connotation of “vermin” in German.
In Sri Lanka, he complains of the "rickshaw coolies" and describes "natives" as "intrusive" and "primitive."
"In such a reality, it is especially pertinent to explore how even the poster-child for humanitarian efforts ... could have held prejudiced and stereotypical beliefs about the members of other nations."
