According to a report by the New York Times, the US Open has decided to change the way it seeds player in order to take into account a player's return to the game following a pregnancy. The USTA's decision comes following a criticism of the sport for how Serena William's ranking affected her seed at the recent French Open. Deadspin points out that because the WTA doesn't protect players' rankings when they take a break during their pregnancies, Williams's WTA ranking fell from number 1 to number 183. The USTA has decided to remedy the situation by changing the Open's seeding standards to not penalize women who choose to have a child during their competitive career.
