According to a report by Reuters, a Mexican court ruling allowing a former union boss to walk free of money laundering charges exposed a serious flaw of other high-profile corruption trials, underscoring the challenge facing the incoming government. Reuters reports that former teachers union leader Elba Esther Gordillo went free this week when a judge dismissed charges that she laundered over 100 million dollars in union funds to pay for luxury goods and plastic surgery. Reuters reports that Judge Miguel Angel Aguilar of Mexico City's first penal tribunal justified his decision, in part, by using a November 2017 Supreme Court ruling that stated prosecutors must obtain court orders before requesting financial records.
