The American Academy Of Pediatricians Say How To Support Trans And Gender Non-Conforming Children

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released a new policy on how to support children and teens who identify as transgender or “gender diverse.” Gender diverse children are kids whose appearances, behaviors, or identities don’t match the sex they were assigned at birth. The average transgender child realizes they identify as a different gender around age eight and a half, but as Lifehacker reports, the children don't typically tell anyone until they’re 18. Some of the recommendations made in the policy for families to implement include: Believing kids- they know who they are. Accepting your child no matter what their gender identity is. The policy says acceptance “fosters secure attachment and resilience,” and benefits the whole family. Additionally, always use the name and pronouns that your child has requested and find ways to make your child feel loved, accepted and comfortable at home. Jason Rafferty, lead author of the statement said “What is most important is for a parent to listen, respect and support their child’s self-expressed identity,”
