Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and US astronaut Nick Hague boarded a plane back to Baikonur from Zhezqazghan on Thursday, after a booster failure forced them to perform emergency landing in the Kazakh steppe.

Their Soyuz capsule is believed to have landed 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) away the city of Zhezqazghan.

The pair were due to join the Expedition 57 crew aboard the International Space Station, and were originally scheduled to return to Earth in April 2019.
