KANYE West and Kim Kardashian have been slammed for meeting with a Ugandan dictator infamous for persecuting gay people.

The A-list pair even handed African strongman Yoweri Museveni an autographed pair of the rapper's famous Yeezy sneakers.

Museveni seized power in 1986 and has overseen human rights atrocities that include jailing and torturing anyone convicted of homosexuality.

In 2014 he introduced tough new homophobic laws amid claims he was using forced examinations to "prove" victims' homosexuality.

The couple also handed out pairs of the sneakers to children - a somewhat misplaced gift considering the thousands of kids that live on the African continent in abject poverty.

West handed Museveni a pair of the sneakers during the couple's visit to the East African nation in which the rapper is said to be recording music in a tent.

The 74-year-old President Yoweri Museveni said he and West held "fruitful discussions" about promoting tourism and arts.

He also gave West and his wife, reality TV star Kim Kardashian West, "Ugandan" names, the State House said in a Facebook post.

However, scores of people on Twitter have blasted the couple for meeting with him given his despicable human rights record.

One person tweeted: "@KimKardashian & Kanye meeting with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is a total f*** you to the entire gay community. Remember which community helps design half your fucking clothes Kim."

Jonathan Van Ness tweeted: "Hopefully Kim & Kanye are in Uganda advocating for its LGBTQ citizens who face a government that has one of the worst records on LGBT rights & safety anywhere in the WORLD, giving President Museveni a pair of shoes, while he advocates for gay men to be burned in public."

Another wrote: "What is thug Yoweri Museveni of Uganda doing with Kanye West? I just saw pics of the two men."

Mithrandir Nikolaj said: "Kanye West lost my respect when he visited Museveni.

"From visiting the Greatest President who brought entire new civilization in America to the last standing dictatorship African President."

The couple has been vacationing in a national park while excited tourism officials see the visit as an endorsement of Uganda's tourism potential.

Uganda's large youth population has increasingly expressed frustration over unemployment and accused the president of being out of touch.

The government recently imposed a tax on social media and the constitution was changed to remove an age limit on the presidency, leading some to worry that Museveni plans to rule for life.

Kasalina wrote on Twitter: "It seems to me like Kanye is obsessed with siding with our oppressors.

"Trump is honestly trash and that’s his superhero. Museveni is a literal dictator and he’s gifting him with sneakers. wth?"

Museveni, one of Africa's longest-serving leaders, has been at the centre of unrest in recent weeks after a local pop star-turned-opposition lawmaker, Bobi Wine, alleged torture by security forces.
