Brexit negotiator on behalf of the European Union Michel Barnier said "much more time" was needed before a deal could be reached, while speaking to reporters in Brussels as he arrived at an EU Summit on Brexit in Brussels on Wednesday.

"We are not there yet," Barnier said regarding a Brexit deal. "Brexit must be orderly for everyone and for all issues, including on the island of Ireland. So we need time, we need much time, much more time. We will continue to work in the next weeks calmly and patiently."

On Sunday, the UK and EU negotiating parties failed to agree a solution for the Irish border, with the EU negotiators demanding the existing Northern Irish backstop be retained and while May will reject any solution "which threatens the UK's integrity."

Wednesday's summit is be one of the last chances to strike a post-Brexit trade deal before the exit date in March 2019.
