WandaVision blew everybody’s minds with the latest episode! Not only did it break the sitcom style every previous episode used, it also introduced a new and exciting concept into the MCU. S.W.O.R.D. has now been introduced as a plot-equivalent to S.H.I.E.L.D.. Yet, if you study the comics, you’d find that the two organizations actually have completely different goals. So what is S.W.O.R.D., how does it differ from S.H.I.E.L.D. and what’s next for its future in the MCU?

Well, the inclusion of Monica Rambeau in S.W.O.R.D. gives us a clear indication of a few directions it will take. After establishing herself with a terrestrial first case, she will likely take to the stars functioning as a superhero astronaut that will fit right in with Captain Marvel 2. This will help establish what S.W.O.R.D. is in relation to S.H.I.E.L.D. as we know from the comics. After a few central characters necessary for S.W.O.R.D. to truly be S.W.O.R.D., it will likely take on a role similar to what it functions as in the comics.

This will give it a big presence in future projects like Secret Invasion, The Fantastic Four and The X-Men. I have some pretty excellent ideas about how S.W.O.R.D. could fit in with these films. From there it could even get its own franchise, assuming fans fall in love with it like they did S.H.I.E.L.D..

So let’s dive right in as we explore the past, present and future of Marvel’s S.W.O.R.D.!
