Michael Rice wrote his new single "Breaking Free" on Christmas Eve in The Netherlands. He tells our Lucy Percy about recording during the pandemic, the song's lyrics, the pressure he felt at Eurovision and more. He says the song shows people who he really is after "All Together Now" and Eurovision 2019. He says it's more original, raw and authentic than his earlier music.

Songwriters: Michael Rice, Roel Rats, Tjeerd Van Zanen and Marcia Sondeijker

About the song
‘Breaking free’ is a heartfelt, motivational, uplifting classical pop track, with a twist of gospel. Get ready for an emotional trip into your soul. Don’t hold back, you’re allowed to cry this time.

It’s a song about breaking away from the mould that society expects you to be. Sometimes it can be you against the world, but you gotta fight for what you believe in and you stand for, even if that means stepping into the unknown. Being that change, regardless of what people may say or think or even judge you for it. It’s all good to be scared, what you feel in your heart is the only truth.
