Turkey began reinforcing its positions on both sides of its border with Syria as Ankara and Washington agreed to coordinate a US withdrawal from Syria.

President Tayyip Erdogan has said Turkey will take over the fight against Islamic State militants, but delay a military operation against Kurdish fighters known as the YPG militia.

President Donald Trump has faced criticism at home and abroad for abruptly beginning to pull US troops out of the conflict and claims Islamic State has been defeated there.

The phone call between Trump and Erdogan included reassurances that both sides would work to avoid a power vacuum once US troops have gone.
