Scientists Discover Way to Identify Electricity-Producing Bacteria

According to Digital Trends, a new discovery in bacteriology could let microbes be used to run fuel cells and purify sewage water. Bacteria have recently been identified that have evolved a unique form of breathing in oxygen-poor environments by producing electricity. These bacteria spawn electrons within their cells, then transfer the electrons through their cell membranes. This process is referred to as extracellular electron transfer. This means that they produce electrons and they could be used to form a microbial fuel cell which generates electricity by capturing these electrons.
