Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., asked Attorney General nominee William Barr to explain why he wrote a memo last year that criticized Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.

Barr said that while he didn't have direct knowledge of the probe, he read a number of news reports about possible obstruction of justice charges Mueller could pursue, and wanted to address that conversation.

He pushed back on criticism he's received in the run-up to his hearing about the memo, describing it as to Graham as "entirely proper. "It's very common for me and former senior officials to weigh in on matters that they think may be ill-advised and have ramifications down the road," he added.
