Officials opened an investigation into Friday night's pipeline blast which killed 71 people in Tlahuelilpan in Hidalgo state on Saturday.

Dozens of charred bodies still remain at the scene, which was cordoned off by security forces.

Relatives of the missing surrounded the site of the explosion in the search for answers. Christopher Neri Carrillo, carrying a photograph of his father, said he was waiting for forensic results. He hadn't seen his father since last night.

Pemex, Mexico's state-owned petroleum company, said the fire was caused by illegal tapping. Before the explosion, a large jet of fuel could be seen rising into the air.

Once the news of the ruptured pipeline spread, local people rushed to fill their containers and were engulfed in the inferno.
