German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas welcomed his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkevics in Berlin on Friday, where the two discussed transatlantic relations, Russia and other topics.

"The sounds coming out of Russia in regards to the INF treaty, the Russian behaviour at the strait of Kerch, I believe this worries us both a lot," commented Maas.

Rinkevics stated that they had discussed "how to strengthen transatlantic relations" as they both shared "the opinion that we need to have strong European-US relations" despite "difficult moments in that."

The US and the EU have been at loggerheads over a range of issues since the election of US President Trump, including climate change, the Iran nuclear deal, NATO spending and trade.
