Presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris has released an unprecedented plan to address the gender pay gap by requiring companies to disclose what they pay employees – and, if they are shown to have gender disparities, pay a fine. Her proposal is just the latest in a decades-long push by legislators to ensure gender equity, starting with President Kennedy’s signing of the Equal Pay Act in 1963 and continuing to Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro’s repeated attempts to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. Jim Braude was joined by Tina Opie, associate professor of management at Babson College, and Beth Lindstrom, former director of consumer affairs under Governor Mitt Romney, who ran in the Republican primary for U.S Senate.
