On Second Thought: Hong Kong's Lam Flip-Flops On Contentious Extradition Bill

Foreign envoys say Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has appeared to be in no mood to compromise on a planned extradition law at recent meetings. After all, she's already dealing with an escalating U.S. trade war and a faltering economy, and tensions in the South China Sea are vexing her bosses in Beijing. According to Reuters, even Hong Kong’s usually reticent judges were worried about the proposed law, which threatened to send people for trial in mainland China for the first time. However, Lam bluntly and repeatedly dismissed their concerns about the widely criticized Chinese justice system, saying judges were not supposed to speak. But on Sunday, the self-styled iron lady of Hong Kong cracked. On Saturday, Lam suddenly announced the bill had been postponed indefinitely.
