Indonesia is expected to send back more than 200 tonnes of rubbish to Australia.
The containers were supposed to contain only wastepaper but were found to contain an unacceptable level of plastics and household waste.
While the plastics are a source of income for some poorer communities, environmentalists are worried about the impact their use has.
Al Jazeera's Florence Looi reports from Bangun village in East Java.
