World War II veteran receives Bronze Star in surprise ceremony 74 years after tank duel

World War II gunner Cpl. Clarence Smoyer, along with his tank crew, received the Bronze Star in a surprise ceremony at the National World War II Memorial on Sept. 18.

The medal recognizes the crew’s heroism during the Battle of Cologne in March 6, 1945 for destroying a German Panther tank.
