Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam had an exchange with MP Muhamad Faisal Manap on the separation of religion and politics. After rounds of clarifications, MP Muhamad Faisal Manap agreed that “religion should be kept separate from politics in Singapore, religion needs to be kept aside from politics so that religion won’t be used to gain personal benefit or the benefit of any political party”. MP Pritam Singh said that while certain faiths constitute value systems, as in MP Manap’s case, politicians must be mindful that they “represent the interests of every community, not just (their) own”.

They spoke in Parliament on 7 October 2019, at the debate on the Second Reading of the Maintenance of Religious Harmony (Amendment) Bill.
