Rep. Adam Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, questioned David Holmes, a top staffer at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, on Nov. 21, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. Holmes testified that U.S. requests to investigate Trump’s political rivals was in contradiction to U.S. efforts to fight corruption. The impeachment inquiry has focused on a July 25 phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. It is also considering whether U.S. aid was contingent upon those investigations. Holmes added that Ukrainians appeared to still have concerns that they would need to make a statement indicating they would investigate the Bidens after U.S. military aid had been released. "This doesn't end with the lifting of the security assistance hold," Holmes said.
