U.S. President Donald Trump says he still has good relationship with North Korea's Kim Jong-un... and that because Kim wants a deal, he doesn't think Kim would want to create hostility that would affect next year's U.S. presidential election.
Our Eum Ji-young has more.
President Trump said Saturday that he does not believe North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would want to interfere in next year's U.S. presidential election... and would be surprised if Kim acted in a hostile way to upset that relationship.
Trump was speaking to reporters at the White House before leaving for Florida.
"We'll see about North Korea. I'd be surprised if North Korea acted hostilely. I have a very good relationship with Kim Jong-un, I think we both want to keep it that way. He knows I have an election coming up, I don't think he wants to interfere with that."
He added that while there *is a certain hostility, without question, the relationship between him and Kim is good. He went on, however, to question the state of ties between the two Koreas themselves.
"I don't know that his relationship with South Korea is very good, but we are going to find out."
North Korea has unilaterally set a deadline for the denuclearization talks... at the end of the year... and continues to raise the pressure.
The regime's ambassador to the United Nations, Kim Song, said Saturday that denuclearization is now off the table, and there is no need for drawn out talks with the U.S.
In a statement, the ambassador said that U.S.... trying to have what it calls "sustained and substantial dialogue" with the North... is using a "time-saving trick" suited to a domestic political agenda for President Trump to win re-election next year.
