At just 39 years of age, Jo Swinson, the Liberal Democrats' youngest and first female leader, declared that she would be campaigning in the 2019 General Election as Britain’s future prime minister.

For someone who had gone from losing her seat as a minister in the coalition in 2015, to winning it back in 2017, to becoming leader of her party, her accession to the top had been quick.

It was also a long way to fall.
