Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took an update on his ambitious Ganges river cleaning project “Namami Gange,” in northern Kanpur city, Saturday, December 14.
The Ganges is one of the most important rivers across India for its uses as an irrigation source and power production, as well as the preservation of aquatic life and religious importance among Hindus, who make up for nearly 80 percent of the country’s population.
Beginning from the Gaumukh Glacier in Himalayas, the Ganges passes through major cities of northern and eastern India, finally culminating in the Bay of Bengal. Its path and volume make it the largest, as well as one of the most polluted rivers in the country. (Reuters)
