A group of Extinction Rebellion (XR) activists, reportedly joined by Friends of the Earth Savoy and ATTAC Savoy, staged a protest blocking Chambery Airport this Sunday.

Protesters hung banners and lay on the ground, while a number formed a human chain with locked arms at the entrance to the airport's premises. Passengers due to depart were taken away in shuttle buses sent by the airport authorities.

The Director of Chambery Airport, Mylene Leuly explained: "We have found solutions to minimise the impact of this action, which for the moment is rather minimal. We have not been hardly impacted because the travellers have been able to get down from their shuttles and get to the terminals to take their flights."

Considered a gateway to the Alps, Chambery Airport has been targeted by XR who are demanding a reduction of flights, leading to its eventual shutdown, and an increase in fuel taxes.
